Group Description
Register for our monthly meeting series here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZAocOmpqz0oGNaGFjAhtDMetWKkKUPJVyQ6.
Background:
The pandemic exposed some major issues in the U.S. food system: hunger and food insecurity and the need for stable and lucrative market channels for small farms. Efforts to create solutions to both these problems at once have multiplied in the last two years, as food pantries, food banks, state and federal government programs, and mutual aid efforts worked to connect local farms to food access programs. The results are creative, systems level solutions that work for the farmer and for people in need. The goal of this group is to connect people working in farm to food assistance value chains to help them connect, share news and best practices, and work through common challenges. We’re hosting a monthly call for this group on the third Thursday of the month.

Congratulations!!! This is fantastic! Will you plug in with LFPA efforts?

Hi Andy –
Our state department of agriculture offered two grants that are funded through ARPA that we applied for. The first is the community food assistance program grant. We were selected last June for round one–our project was $96k to run a program where we source from local farms as much as we can and distribute food to food insecure households. The total amount that was available at that point was $500k. They announced a second round of funding for $6m, so we applied for funding to continue the program for the next two years and to buy a bigger delivery vehicle.
The second grant (we were not selected) was for one organization up to $3m to build a facility for aggregation and distribution. Not sure who was awarded.

Thank you so much Kelli for sharing. It is so helpful to see how you are able to get ARPA funding to support food programs. We are working with our Regional Food Bank of OK’s LFPA funding. We are looking at a local ARPA grant for additional funding support food programs and some infrastructure!

We have two LFPA funded entities – the Walker River Paiute Tribe and the NV Dept of Agriculture. We are providing technical assistance to the tribe and will be happy to partner with the NDA once they have ironed out the wrinkles. At this juncture it looks like LFPA through NDA is going to be managed in concert with the new Home Feeds Nevada program which has $2m to spend on produce and products that are raised or made in Nevada for distribution through the two Feeding America affiliated food bank networks. We are limited with Home Feeds Nevada to a delivery role–not sure if we will have more of an opportunity with LFPA yet.

Great job! Can you ask the agency who did get awarded the $3M?
-
It was the Feeding America affiliated food bank network.
