    Hi Food Hub Folks!

This is a question I’ve continually come across and just want to see if any of you know of any data that is out there that helps food hubs determine competitive salaries for their employees? National averages for similar job descriptions within mission-oriented local food moving food hubs (and not just the broad category of food distribution)? How do you determine competitive salaries for your employees?

    Thank you,

    Katelyn

    Hi Katelyn,

We are in the beginning phase of a food hub inside a non-profit organization. We are determining our salaries based on two studies of non-profit salaries in our county and in our state. We are considering the level that the person functions in our organization. For example, the person overseeing the hub would be considered a manager, the person coordinating activities would be a coordinator. There are corresponding salary ranges for each of those listed in the studies. I hope that’s helpful.

    Hello!

Our hub is affiliated with a community college, which has benefits and challenges. One area that can be considered a benefit or a challenge is that we are tied to the college’s pay structure. This is nice because there is a structure in place, but not so great that we have to follow their pay brackets, which haven’t been updated for 5 years. They are in the middle of a pay study to adjust pay accordingly, which is also difficult right now as many other college’s and organizations are adjusting their pay due to inflation.

For our structure, we have one administrator that runs the show and gets grants. From there we have two manager positions that run our hub operation and our educational farm. Under them we have our operations coordinators, below them are our full/part-time technicians which are slightly more skilled positions than our part-time hub/farm lab assistants, which are mostly college students. The technician level is where our logistics/administrative positions fall. Lab assistants do mostly light processing work- making carrot sticks out of carrots, etc.

Let me know if you’d like me to expand or clarify anything.

    Crystal

    Hey Katelyn –

Michigan State University, in partnership with the Wallace Center, is wrapping up analysis of the 2021 Food Hub Survey. In this study, we asked hubs about salary and benefits – and include a breakdown of answers for managers and employees. I’m attaching here the *draft* excerpt of this data, which shows minimum, maximum and average salary ranges.

We plan to publish the full Food Hub Survey report in January or February – so stay tuned for more!
