Sanitizer for microgreen operation

Hi all! I received a question from a microgreen grower about sanitizers for seed sanitizing/soaking and mold mitigation. They use hydrogen peroxide now and want other product recommendations. Does anyone know about other types of sanitizers used in microgreen operations? Thanks!

Hey I meant to reply ages ago but got sidetracked. At the FSOP Project Directors meeting in May <b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; color: var(–bb-body-text-color);”>Kristen Gibson Director, Center for Food Safety at university of Arkansas talked about a project they are doing on micro greens. It would be worth reaching out to her. would love to know what she has to say.

Thanks Lindsay! I’ll definitely reach out to her, sounds like an interesting project… even if she doesn’t have an answer to this exact question I’d love to hear more about her work. Mahalo

    Hey all

    3 things

I was on a call today with reps from Biosafe. Talking about when SaniDate 5.0 will be labeled for use in produce wash water to control human pathogens – right now it’s only labeled for plant pathogens. It will be 18 months or so before the label is changed. SaniDate 15.0 is labeled for that use but it’s 3x more concentrated (not as safe to handle without mechanized measuring) and the smallest container is 5 gallons (5.0 smallest container is 2.5 gallons). Not ideal for very small operations. If a farm already has a 5 gallon tub, isn’t getting GAP certified or is exempt from the PSR I am telling just to use 5.0. It is definitely effective at 40 ppm for human pathogens in wash water it’s just waiting on the label revision. It takes a few independent tests and a whole lot of $$ to get there. For farms who are getting GAP certified or PSR inspected I’m recommending they buy SaniDate 15.0 and handle it carefully. It costs more but it’s legal. Both 15.0 and 5.0 are good for food contact surfaces.

Grace and Chess, if you are still wondering about treatment for micro greens water I suggest you talk to Biosafe. They work with indoor growing of various kinds. The reps for the western region are Eric Smith and Dusty Beroso. I’ll add their contact info when I get it.

Last things is I have come up with a list of kinder gentler food surface sanitizers. Many of the farmers I work with wanna to use less harsh chemicals. I’m pretty sure these are EPA labeled except perhaps the Hypocleanse but I’m looking into it. All of them are ready to use which for very small operations kinda makes sense. They’re not using large volumes and it avoids buying things in larger volume that pass their expiration before they are empty. The wipes are also good for dry cleaning and for out in the field or greenhouse. Let me know if you have any experience with or thoughts about these.

    Cheers, Lindsay

Hi Lindsay, thanks so much! I was on the site this morning so that I can share it with a new hire, but saw your message and am excited to share these sanitizer options with our group. Hopefully we can find them here. Have a great day 🙂

Thanks for this information, Lindsay! Good to know about the plan for Sanidate 5.0. I’ll reach out to the Biosafe folks about use in microgreen operations after you share their contact information.

Growers I work with are also starting to ask about less harsh sanitizers. I did an OMRI search a while back and identified 3 for a particular grower worried about pollinators. Briotech was one, along with Nixall and Envirocleanse A. Attaching their EPA labels here. They are a very small operation so as you said, these ready to use options work for them.
