Constructing effective positions

Hello all! Within my small organization (part farm / part food systems development projects) I am primarily responsible for all 6 of our grant projects (writing, implementing the work, and reporting). I spend no more than 25% FTE on any one grant, and as little as 4% FTE on some. This is seeming more and more unwieldy. What is a normal time split on grants? In your experience, how many should any one person be responsible? Any idea on how we can construct positions that will be enabled to effectively do good work?

Hi Anna. I feel your exhaustion. I too am in the same boat and seeking to find the same resolutions. The best answer I could give you is to hire grant writer, but nobody knows your organization better than you do! I have a cache file of “go-to” phrases, data, that I multi-use on various grant applications, but you are right – it’s not fair. I think the grant writing process should be included in the grant award process – especially when it comes to covering administrative costs. The struggle is real. I haven’t found the answer, but know that I understand your woes! I salute you and give you a pat on the back for keeping up the good writing! May you succeed in your grant writing, reporting, awarded journey!
