Hub that sells to itself from its own farm?

    Hello all,

I am helping an organization that is developing a new food hub and small production farm that will both sit under the umbrella of the organization. They plan to sell what they produce on the farm through the hub and would like to talk to hubs who are currently doing this (or have previously done this). They are specifically hoping to gain some insights into how other similar projects are doing their internal accounting.

    Thank you!

Hi Sarah! Local Food Marketplace recently hosted a webinar with Good Agriculture on Farm and Hub accounting practices which may useful for the organization you’re working with. I’m happy to follow up with more details. Here’s the link to the recording: https://home.localfoodmarketplace.com/webinar-financial-management/

I am also interested in how this would work, so I’ll be following for responses. For context, I co-own and manage our small food hub and also our family farm. Both businesses are for-profit. The farm was established a couple years before the hub. Rather than the food hub being an enterprise of our farm, we opted to establish a second LLC for the hub which operates with online retail and a retail brick&mortar store. Currently, our farm is just one of many that sells into the food hub.

I hire a bookkeeper that helps with both LLCs which is helpful, but there are many times I wonder if it would have been easier to keep them together. Not sure if it would make sense at this point to combine the businesses under one umbrella org, but I am curious to hear if there are others that have made this work well.

    Thanks,
