Food hub liability

    Hi Food Safety CoP,

I have a liability-related question as it pertains to food hubs. In the case of a recall, who holds the liability (the farmer or the food hub)? If there is not a straightforward answer to this, what are the questions food hubs should consider when thinking about liability and recall?

    Thanks all!

Hi Alicia. The liability for a recall could be with either the Food Hub (for example cold chain break or environmental contamination) or the Producer or even a third party. When vetting new members, Puget Sound Food Hub requires a written recall plan and commercial liability insurance with the food hub listed as an additional insured, along with other food safety documentation. In our Guide For Producers we state that we will assist with Producer recalls by contacting customers and following through with our own recall plan. In other words, your food hub should have a recall plan and liability insurance and so should your producers. I’m curious what other hub are doing as well.
