Hi all! At the CoP call yesterday, I shared that we hosted a collaborative training and mapping session in San Antonio. Several folks were interested in learning more, so I’ve included a bit of info below. If you’d like to know more, shoot me an email ([email protected]) and I’m happy to share. I will say, this event was possible because we worked with the incredible Elliott Smith at Kitchen Sync Strategies who has led sessions like this several times in communities across the country. He is a wealth of info and a delight to work with!

Who we invited: We had about 20 participants that spanned farm to institution work. Participants included our state Department of Agriculture, City sustainability staff, farm technical assistance providers, and agricultural economic researchers. We had folks from state and city government, universities, nonprofits, and for-profit consultants. We specifically marketed this to support actors, not farmers or buyers, although we did have some folks who held multiple identities (eg rancher who was also a consultant, school food staff who is on the food policy board). Most of the folks had not directly collaborated with each other before, many were brand new to each other. We offered travel stipends to those who needed them, and translation services although no one requested that.

What we discussed: The event was 1.5 days (1/2 day Tues, all day Wed). The first ~2 hours was just focused on understanding why we were gathering, grounding in equity and justice, and building trust with the group assembled. The rest of day 1 was a lot of vocab norming, definitions, examples, and framework. Day 2 focused on our region: what does our current network development look like, what focus does this group have, and then mapping it all out.
